eVars vs props in Adobe Analytics

The difference between eVars and props in Adobe Analytics: traffic vs conversion variables, persistence, pathing and attribution.

Quick answer

In Adobe Analytics, props are traffic variables: they describe what happened on a hit and expire immediately, which makes them useful for pathing. eVars are conversion variables: they persist beyond the hit, so they can be credited for later success events such as purchases or sign-ups. Use eVars with success events to measure conversion.

In AEP and CJA

When Adobe Analytics data flows into AEP through the Analytics source connector, eVars and props arrive as XDM fields. In Customer Journey Analytics, persistence and attribution are set in the data view instead of at collection time.

Frequently asked questions

Can a prop be used for attribution?

Not in the same way; props do not persist. Use an eVar, or set persistence in a CJA data view.

Do I need eVars in CJA?

CJA uses dimensions from the dataset; persistence is configured in the data view.
